Vigilance

A vigilante goes out each night and only defends people who try to stand up for themselves. However, her actions become intertwined with the efforts of one of the people she saves. And soon enough, she finds herself responsible for the fate of another victim.

In 2015, I really wanted to direct an action scene. It was a bucket list thing in my film career. And I wasn’t sure if there would be an opportunity for that on my horizon (as the projects I was working on didn’t have any straight-up fight scenes in them).

At the same time, I was noodling with an idea of a vigilante who would go out each night and would only protect people who stood up for themselves. If someone was attacked and they didn’t fight back, she would let it happen. But, if someone tries to fend off an attacker, she would come to their rescue. The idea was to turn this into a series where the vigilante with this principle would inadvertently inspire a city to rise up and take a stand.

It was a thrill making this scene/episode. And it was such a great experience working with James Cosgrave, John Mulvey, Laura Flynn, and Eoin Leahy on choreographing the fight scene itself.

And that’s not all…

We took this idea to RTE’s Storyland Competition and together with Tailored Films, producer Paula Stewart and director Dave Thorpe, we developed it into a 21-page script. Dave also took the episode above, shot some additional material, and made a new promo from it as well:
