The Keys to the City

3 lives intertwine, connect and collide in the big city.

Eoin is a businessman who can no longer pay the bills or the mortgage, Paul is a landlord with the banks breathing down his neck and Monika is a Polish cleaner whose minimum wage job is under threat. All three are struggling for survival and forced to make difficult choices. Through separate, but interlinked stories, their choices affect their own lives as well as others. Together the stories provide an intimate portrait of ordinary people trying to keep their heads above water when every choice has a consequence and some can be a step too far.

This film was produced as part of the Filmbase and it was an incredible experience. Three screenwriters crafted three stories, each realized by different directors and presented as one interconnected story.

I directed the ‘Monika with a K’ storyline.

It definitely was one of the more challenging productions I’ve been a part of. Mainly due to the concept of the project itself. We were literally designing the blueprint of how a film like this could be accomplished, as we were producing it. Filmbase would eventually go on to produce a variety of other feature films as well, all modelled off of this pioneering venture.

Keys to the City was also a wholly rewarding experience as well. I learned so much about the craft of filmmaking, creative collaboration, and leadership. I was also fortunate to work with some brilliant cast and crew members that I would work with on future projects as well. This project definitely helped define the next few years of my career and open doors that I may never have been able to without it. Thank you, Filmbase, for putting your trust in me 🌟
